Liming the Fence
Years ago people weren’t so fortunate and financially so well off as they are today. One thing was for sure though they took a lot of pride in their families, what they had and their properties.
Those were the days of Lime and Whitewashed fences. Almost every household had a lime barrell, where the raw lime (a white powdery substance) could be mixed with water and used to brush on the fences, barns and in a lot of cases even the house.
It was very often a chore that fell on the younger ones. You would be given a large hairy brush a bucket of lime from the barrel and some old clothes. “Now boy go Lime the Fence”
